You may be asking why your car’s headlights are turning yellow and deteriorating when this wasn’t a problem before. In the old days headlights were made of glass. They were the same on all cars, either one or two round headlights on each side of the car.
The new headlights are a unique part of the design of each car. There is no limit to the sizes and shapes and number of lights on each car. The manufacturers do this by making the headlights out of strong, moldable, impact resistant polycarbonate plastic.
The good news is that the new lights are good looking and put out more light than the old fashioned glass sealed beams. The bad news is that after three or four years the plastic will turn yellow due to the effects of the sun and the weather.
The deterioration of the lenses creates two major problems. First, the lights just look ugly. Nobody wants their expensive new car to look unattractive and uncared for. Also, if you’re planning to sell your car soon, it deducts from the value and marketability. The other major problem is safety. The whole point of having headlights on your car is to be able to see at night. Severely damaged lenses can restrict the light coming from your headlights by up to 95%.
According to the National Safety Council, even though there are 60% fewer cars on the road at night, traffic accidents and related fatalities are three times higher between sunset and dawn. A large number of those accidents are directly related to impaired vision due to diminished headlight function
